SWITCH3-Way LED Bulb First Look
Posted on March 19, 2013.
We're pleased to give you a first look at a pre-production version of SWITCH3-Way LED llght bulb. The SWITCH3-Way as its name would suggest is a 3-Way lamp compatible version of the immensely popular SWITCH line of LED light bulbs. Due to be released in May, the SWITCH3-Way is the first three-way LED bulb in the industry. Three-way lamps are quite popular in both residential and hospitality applications and until now, there have been very few options outside of thee-way incandescent lamps to replace them.
Firstly though, it is helpful to review just how a 3-way lamp operates. A 3-way lamp, also known as a tri-light, is a lamp that uses a 3-way bulb to produce three levels of light in a low-medium-high configuration. A 3-way lamp requires a 3-way bulb and socket, and a 3-way 2-circuit switch. Unlike a lamp controlled by a dimmer, each of the filaments operates at full voltage and the normal temperature for an incandescent bulb, so the color of the light does not change over the three steps of light available.
A 3-way socket has three electrical contacts. In addition to the two contacts of the standard socket, a third contact is added. This contact is positioned off-center in the bottom of the socket. This extra contact matches a ring-shaped contact on the bottom of a 3-way bulb, which creates the connection for the second filament inside the bulb.
The center contact of the bulb typically connects to the medium-power filament, and the ring connects to the low-power filament. Thus, if a 3-way bulb is screwed into a standard light socket that has only a center contact, only the medium-power filament operates. In the case of the 50W / 100W / 150W bulb, putting this bulb in a regular lamp socket will result in it behaving like a normal 100W bulb.
The SWITCH-3Way in final production form will operate at 300, 800 and 1200 lumen modes thus replacing 30, 60 and 75 watt outputs. (The pre-production model we tested was rated at 200/600 and 1200 lumens) We tested the SWITCH3-Way in a standard three way socket and found it to perform flawlessly. Check out our video below:
So there you have it, a first look at the SWITCH3-Way. SWITCH3-Way will be available in May 2013. You can view our product page for the SWITCH3-Way here and sign up to be notified when the product is available.
